For what though? PvP? PvE? Is there a special role you need to fulfill?
Earth elementalists are good for their wards, they cast quickly, and cannot be disenchanted, and benefit anybody in your party who's in the area.
Stick close to your monks/softies and drop ward against elemental + ward against melee to help out with damage reduction.
Armor of Earth could save your butt if you notice you're about to be spiked.
Obsidian Flesh has its uses too, if you're not using a mesmer elite. Depending on your role you could try packing obsidian flame to help with damage spiking.
Oh yeah, pack hex breaker if you have the room.
